How Online Judge Works ?

Hello Every one! 
First of all I want to give a big thanks to all people who are spending a lots of time for making this forum LIVE! Another thanks go to all moderators also.
Now, my question comes- How this Online Judge is working? I think though this is not important to many problem solver. But there may remain many people who want to know more about the working principles of Valladolid's Online Judge. Specially, in my University - Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET), I have seen several students are trying to make a judge system
and spending a lot of time for that !
There remains some documentation on Online judging systems. But I don't know the links. If anybody knows, please inform me. I think fpnc can help on this thread. People may gather a deep knowledge from the later post.
